"I saw a child who could not walk, sit on a horse, laugh and talk... I saw a child who could only crawl, mount a horse and sit up tall. I saw a child born into strife, take up and hold the reins of life. ~ John Anthony Davis

Simple Changes Therapeutic Riding Center is about changing lives one simple step at a time. The program was founded in 2004 with the knowledge that riding and caring for horses significantly improves the lives of individuals with physical, emotional, and developmental disabilities.

Simple Changes provides individuals with and without disabilities the opportunity to learn from horses and each other. Our standards of excellence include safety, compassion, joy and respect for all participants. Most of our current participants come from Northern Virginia and have a variety of disabilities including autism, genetic syndromes, cerebral palsy and youth at risk.

Therapeutic riding benefits the body, mind and spirit. Physical benefits include improved:

  • muscle tone
  • gait
  • balance
  • posture

Cognitive skills are improved by lessons that include:

  • following directions
  • sequencing during riding activities

Riders' spirits are buoyed as they experience independent movement, build confidence and make new friends - both equine and human.

We are accredited and nationally recognized by the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA) and our instructors are NARHA certified. The program offers both therapeutic sport riding and hippotherapy - specific therapeutic techniques using the movement of the horse to facilitate treatment.

Simple Changes is a community of support for those who need it most.
